Loose cellulose fibers, paper dust, or cutting debris trapped between the printing plate and the substrate prevent ink from adhering properly to the paper surface.
Inconsistent surface sizing or uneven paper coating can create localized spots that resist oil- or water-based inks.
- Ink Drying and Contamination:
Dried bits of ink from the fountain rollers or dust particles airborne in the print shop can settle on the printing plate, acting as a physical barrier.
Using a single-pass black (such as 100% K) without a supporting bed of cyan, magenta, and yellow can leave micro-gaps, making natural texture flaws appear as white spots.
Prevention and Avoidance Strategies
- Utilize "Rich Black" Color Profiles:
Instead of printing with standard 100% Black (K=100\%), use a rich black blend—such as 60% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 40% Yellow, and 100% Black (C:60, M:40, Y:40, K:100). The added color layers fill in microscopic pores and ensure complete opacity, preventing the white paper base from showing through.
- Maintain a Clean Printing Environment:
Routinely clean printing plates, blankets, and rollers to eliminate dried ink buildup. Using anti-static brushes or vacuum systems on the paper feed helps remove loose paper dust before it reaches the press.
- Select Premium Substrates:
Choose high-density, smooth coated papers or pre-dyed black paperboards (where the paper pulp itself is dyed black throughout) rather than relying solely on heavy black ink coverage over white stock.
- Apply Protective Coatings:
Adding a matte or gloss varnish, soft-touch lamination, or UV coating locks in the ink layer and fills micro-voids, creating a seamless, uniform dark finish.
